Somaliland Dismisses Claims of Israeli Military Presence
The rejection came after Somalia alleged that the breakaway territory had agreed to such measures in exchange for diplomatic recognition from Israel.
Just last week, West Jerusalem signed a declaration acknowledging Somaliland as an independent state, marking the first and only country to do so. Somaliland, which declared independence from Somalia more than thirty years ago, had not previously received recognition from any nation.
On Tuesday, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud told a news agency that the recognition “was not merely a diplomatic gesture but a cover for specific, high-stakes Israeli strategic objectives.”
He claimed these objectives included relocating Palestinians, establishing an Israeli base along the Gulf of Aden, and integrating Somaliland into the Abraham Accords – a set of normalization agreements between Israel and Arab nations.
The Somaliland Foreign Ministry dismissed the allegations as “baseless,” asserting they were “intended to mislead the international community and undermine Somaliland’s diplomatic progress.”
Meanwhile, Israel and Hamas reached a ceasefire in early October after more than two years of conflict in Gaza, which began following a surprise Hamas assault in October 2023.
Reports suggest Israel’s coalition government has promoted the annexation of both Gaza and the West Bank while encouraging Palestinians to depart their homeland.
